I shift my backpack on my back to grab my luggage out of the overhead bin. The line ahead of me is finally thinning, and I am beyond excited to get off this airplane.

The five-hour flight felt longer because I was so anxious about what I left behind and even more anxious about what I am about to walk into. I have a phone full of messages and a head full of thoughts. Not to mention that I'm exhausted. Sleep eluded me on this long flight due to the toddler who decided to throw four separate tantrums.

I murmur a quick thanks to the flight crew as I exit the airplane and make my way down the makeshift hallway into the airport. I scan my surroundings to look for a restaurant and spot one with a bar.

Perfect.

I have about an hour before my cousin, Jess, gets here to pick me up. As soon as I posted in my stories on Instagram that I was at JFK heading home, I received a flood of DM's asking a million questions. When I saw Jessica had responded, I was immediately excited.

She is from my dad's side of the family, the Jones' side. I didn't know my dad very well, so I value the few people I do have a relationship with on his side of the family. Jess is my aunt Janet's daughter and three years younger than me. When she saw I was flying in, she immediately offered to pick me up and said I could stay with her and her son, Chance. I'm not really a kid person, although, I would consider children with the right person. Honestly, the thought of staying with a four-year-old for three days with everything going on right now makes me wince, but the hotel prices made my wince worse, so I was grateful that she offered.

I tuck my luggage beneath the bar and take a seat. Looking to my left, I see an older woman looking at her phone. The bartender is serving a beautiful mimosa to a young man to my right. The music is low, which I am grateful for after the loud flight. I sigh and pick up my menu, suddenly famished.

After I order, I finally look at my phone to sift through the messages. I text Alyse and Louis, letting them know that I am safe and sound in San Francisco. I see a voicemail from an unknown number and frown.

“Hi Serenity, this is detective Markovich, I have some news for you in your sister's case. I know you're traveling today, so please call me when you have some time to talk.”

My heartbeat quickens.

We have some news in your sister's case.

I glance around me, wondering if I should do this here. I spot an empty table in the corner of the tiny eating area. I quickly gather my stuff and make a beeline for the table. Once seated, I pull out my phone and call Markovich's phone number.

“Hello, you've reached Detective John Markovich, please leave me a brief message, and I will get right back to you as soon as I can.
